The Compass : Bringing together the map holders to a common destination

Claiming one’s place in the light of truth

A despairing, disunited People

It will be the 3rd month of my public life this month of May of 2008 and if there is one thing that I have come to realize during this difficult period of my life is that there so many good Filipinos, all sharing a common dream of having a Peaceful, Progressive and a Dignified Nation. In fact this realization led me to reflect upon this question, why is it that if we have so many good Filipinos sharing the same dreams and aspiration, yet it is the bad ones that are lording it over the land & preventing the good ones from achieving their goal?

During many conversations with these groups of different socio-economic backgrounds, different ideological leanings, different religion or sects, different sectoral concerns, different regional origins and of different mindsets, I noticed that they are generally distrustful of each other’s motives and disagreeable with each other’s approach to rid the country of the evil that is upon it. It makes me feel sad to watch them come to a meeting because they share the same the goal then go out of that meeting as enemies just because they do not agree which approach should be adapted in achieving their common goal. For the meantime, the people are subjected to all forms of corruption that robs the poor of their basic services, robs the middle class of their income, robs the rich of their soul, robs the clergy of their spirituality, robs the soldiers of their gallantry, and finally robbing the Nation of Hope itself!

How can an entire Nation of 89 million Filipinos allowed itself to suffer such dishonor from a few evil ones? In the silence of the long, dark nights here is the reflection of my discernment of this question and situation…

Different maps, One destination

I see the trouble amongst the good people are primarily brought about by the unresolved question as to who has the best map to bring the Filipino people to that common destination of a peaceful, progressive and dignified Nation. In my humble opinion, I think that there is no answer to that question, because the good people are coming in from different socio-economic locations, a different ideological direction, a different religious orientation, and a different regional scale. I humbly submit a proposition that instead of insisting of finding an answer to the question as to who has the best map towards that common destination, is to ask every map holder particularly those who have invested so much blood, time and resources in crafting their map, to simply respect each other’s maps and accept that there is no single map that can bring the people to the common destination from such a diverse set of locations, directions, orientations and scales. As we respect and accept one another’s map, the question that must be answered is how to bring altogether those who shares a common goal for the country to that single destination?

A compass as a philosophy for unity

Why don’t we ask everyone to use a compass instead? A compass will always point to the north no matter which location you are coming from, no matter which direction you are facing, no matter what orientation and scale you are using in your map, a compass can provide the philosophy for unity of the different groups of map holders which can be translated into a practical reality which many Filipinos has been longing for a long time. The seeking of the truth behind the different scandals and anomalies can be the compass that every map holder can use, this truth is not an abstract thing. It’s a truth that we shall need to bring about justice to our long suffering people, it’s a justice that we shall need to bring peace to our weary people.

Claiming your place in the light of truth

As we now begin to be aware of the magnitude of corruption and its ill effect to the people, as we begin to understand what is keeping the Filipino nation in the darkness of despair, and as an individual pondering what action to take to reject this evil that has come upon our land. Let me share with you a growing phenomenon I have seen, heard and read over this last three months, I have seen individual, families, groups of Filipinos each one claiming their place in the light of truth.

St. Thomas Aquinas said that “Evil is like a shadow that can be made to disappear when the light of truth shines upon it”.

I believe that as each Filipino begins claiming their place in the light of truth, the shadow that is evil will begin to disappear in our land. May God, Allah, Jehovah or whatever name the different map holders calls God, bless us all with the courage and wisdom to claim our place in the light of truth.

For our children and our Nation, let us all claim our place in the light of Truth!

We should start One language-One nation. It appears that unity among ethnic Malay Filipinos is elusive. Marcos Revolutionary Government and his New Society Movement failed to bring unity and likewise with Cory Aquino Revolutionary government. I don’t understand why bogus Philippine President Gloria Arroyo still in power. More than 70% Filipinos want her ousted. The opposition is headless. They may need a trusted leader to unify a divided nation and lead a just cause.

“One language–One-nation”? Whoever says that is barking at the moon — baliw!

Unity is boredom, craziness. There is beauty in diversity, multiplicity. Look at most peoples’ favorite cooler on summer — halo-halo — mas maganda, mas masarap at lalong mas mabenta kapag maraming colors at flavors, syempre.

    Palibre naman ng halo-halo diyan?

  4. Kamagong — June 1, 2008 #

    Sino ang baliw?

Re: “One language–One-nation”? Whoever says that is barking at the moon — baliw!

How can you unify a divided ethnic Filipino Malays without a common language ? You may communicate then with sign language. Ethnicity, regionalism and language are factors of disunity. There’s no such thing as free halo-halo. Don’t beg, work for it. Anyways, beggars have no choice. Thanks to palibre culture.

the compass can however be manipulated, if you place a magnet under it, the compass will be spinning in different direction. just like what you said, it can direct us to a correct destination, but for the magnet.. it will lead us to nothing.

If I were one of the corrupt employees or officials of government, I would definitely
want J. Lozada to just keep quite and mind his own damn business!

  14. ABS of LA — June 3, 2008 #

TRUE.

PAY UP.

birds with the same feathers flock together - so true for lozada’s tribe.

    ano to,

    are like “LAP DOGS”.

AMEN to that!!!!

  25. ABS of LA — June 4, 2008 #

Sa Sandigan Bayan at sa Office of the Umbudsman?

I have tried reading the commentors here to look for some vestige of constructive criticism but a lot of hot air lang yata at walang magawa itong mga taong ito.
I agree with you Mr Lozada. You are quite diplomatic in your assessment of all these open dialogues. I simply call it EGO. I find the people with the truest “Maps” are those in action. They do not have time to comment in blogs nor attend symposium after symposium. They are out there. Not working just to feed their families (although, that is what it is all about, diba?) but working in all integrity and hope that in their little way, they add to the well-beingness of a whole community.
I do not have the solution for anything in a big way…I can only pray that God works in each and everyone of us!
    GOD BLESS US ALL!

Jun Lozada, Bearer of the Compass
Sometimes it’s hard to separate the man from the message. Eng’r. Jun Lozada, the Senate witness on the controversial NBN-ZTE deal, like a voice from the wilderness, has been all over the country spreading the word for societal transformation. With undeniable charisma he has touched the lives and imagination of the simplefolk, the middleclass, intelligentsia and the high society. Yet he has remained stubbornly humble, refusing to be aligned to any politician or party or even established civil society and activist groups.

We cannot help but believe his message as genuine. He has never showed or even hinted of any political ambition. He has repeated with consistency that all he ever hopes for is for the Filipino to awaken from the slumber induced by systemic corruption. He has called on to every Filipino to light up the truth within them and not be afraid to be the change they want to be. That from each individual the light of truth should spread to enlighten the whole of society.
Jun Lozada’s call for societal transformation is also a call for spiritual renewal, as change in society goes hand-in-hand with personal revolution. He often tells the crowd that routinely gathers around him to stop the habit of always pointing at others for reform but instead start addressing their own personal truths.

Societal transformation must also not stop at replacing leaders but should target the very root of corruption and social cancer. The culture of bad governance and the defeatist mindset of the poor must be replaced with the culture of compassion and hope.
He has further explained his social analysis that for Filipinos to bring about the potential greatness of their country they must embrace a conduct and attitude that encompasses transformative vision, courage, grasp of social reality and unbending ethics.
Mr. Lozada is optimistic that the Filipino can pull it through but the all too elusive “unity” must happen first. He said that this country does not lack visionaries and good-intentioned activists but the problem lies on our arrogance against individual agendas. We all claim to be the “way”. We all claim, in fact, to be the “only” way. To this Mr. Lozada proposes that we learn to respect each other’s “map” and instead set our sights on the “compass” of truth for societal and personal transformation. While we will be coming from various diverse socio-religio-economic demography we all long for a just, sustainable, and peaceful Philippines. The core of the message is to follow the true north of lasting change.

In his talks around the country, Eng’r. Jun Lozada is being protected by his spritual advisers — the nuns from various religious congregrations, the La Salle Brothers and several bishops. The nuns are led by no less than two of the country’s foremost babaylans and social activists, Sister Mary John Mananzan and Sister Estrella Castalone.

I have observed that it is very hard to moderate debates and discussions without laying down certain rules of order. I propose that all statements should follow the rules on logic and argumentation. No fallacies in reasoning should be allowed. A statement must be exhaustively elaborated. Argumentum ad hominem or attacks on the person rather than on the idea should at all times avoided.

Assumptions must be specifically identified as assumptions. A lot of people here write down assumptions as if they were facts. So let’s all be civilized and respect this blog.

If we want to discuss an idea the procedure should be like a scientific paper. Yung walang batayan eh mag-research muna.

I know the nuns can defend themselves. But for those who know little or nothing, the various congregations have projects for the poor and the underprivileged, including political detainees, abused women, etc. not only the sanctuary fund program.

The problem with people is that they speak ahead of any spade-work. The nuns have been working for the transformation of this society sans the funfare and the media spotlight accorded to politicians, administration and opposition alike. The nuns have been doing their work even before martial law, during and post-EDSA.

To those who doubt or question the sincerity and involvement of the nuns should join them in the streets, in the orphanages, in the slum areas and only then can you criticize their motives.

I believe the nuns and priests can defend themselves but let me share my comment on the pointless criticisms against them. Sans media funfare and the support of politicians, administration and opposition alike, the nuns and priests have been doing their part in helping transform our society through their various projects like orphanages, feeding programs, out-of-school-youth projects, community organizing, etc.

Recently, I am an eyewitness on how they lend their support to the Sumilao farmers. I know for a fact that they have been helping abused women and children. I know for a fact, that they are busy helping other from daybreak to sunset literally.

Therefore those who say negative things about them don’t know them because they have never worked with them. I have been with them in the slum areas. In Payatas and Smokey Mountain. A Good Shepperd nun introduced me to Liberation Theology.

To their critics let me say this, “ano na ba inambag mo para sa kapwa at bayan?” Sumama ka sa pakikibaka. Join us in the streets, in the slums… Join us in spreading light in the dark corners of society. It’s not too late, pwede pang magkaroon ng saysay buhay mo!

Just like the Philippine Society, the Religious groups can be categorized into different groups. The Conservatives, the Moderates and the Liberals. These three different forces are what guide the church in its thousands of years of existence.
I would say that none is better than the other. They all make up what makes the church RELEVANT TO THE PRESENT NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE. That is the reason why some Bishops are for the status quo, some are for change of leadership while the rest are praying hard that nothing drastic happens to the society in general.

I think it is unfair to go for labels like moderates, liberals, conservatives, etcetera. These labels only make us judge and oftentimes it really is unfair. For those who are addicted to this practice, well…let it be. Until they find our for themselves it is limiting their hearts and minds. It really is the Individual versus System in my humble opinion. I have known (albeit briefly) young and idealistic seminarians trying to unite ideas and beliefs into their lives. Only to be discouraged by the thinking of their “superiors”. So, they either become drop-outs from the vocation that they love or struggle through the status quo of the religious order they are in.
I know also several nuns (they were novitiates at that time) who have the purest of hearts and are still in “active duty.” Whenever I see nuns and priests joining rallies, I often feel that they have prayed for deep guidance.
The religious life is full of exercises on discipline. Hindi nga lang (sa palagay ko) well explained ang essence of celibacy and poverty. masyado pang mababaw…sa tingin ko. But nevertheless, I deeply admire these brave nuns and priests, who to my mind keep their thoughts focused to their inner God and not to the external “all sound and fury signifying nothing.”

  48. bernadette — June 14, 2008 #

In fairness to all the nuns and priests who are really worjing their butts off to provide services to the poor, WHICH this government should be doing. I hope the religious bashers here would give them some slack. As Bodhi said, eh kayo ba? Ano ba ginawa niyo? Though I admire the nuns more than the priests when it comes to defending the rights of the nation. Actually , to the religious bashers out there, eh ano namn ang masasabi niyo sa mga brown baggers na Obispo at Cardinal?

  49. ABS of LA — June 14, 2008 #

Let us not forget the role the religious had during the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The execution of Frs. GOMEZ, BURGOS AND ZAMORA contributed to the uprising of the Filipinos against the Spanish oppression of their subjects. Religious priests and nuns have a mission to defend and fight in behalf of the oppressed.
While it is their prime obligation to provide spiritual nourishment to their flock, it is likewise their obligation to step up when civil authorities do not provide or worse still deny protection to citizens who are in need of such.
JLO had nobody else to turn to. He could have been provided security detail by the DOJ, or any other government institution that are mandated to do so under the law, but instead he found out that these very same institutions are in the forefront of treating him like a fugitive running away from the claws of the ARROYO administration.
If the church in the persons of the priests and nuns denied protecting JLO his civil liberties, who else could he turn to? If this would have happened, WE WILL NEVER SEE ANOTHER JLO who could muster the courage that JLO had. Then we can sadly say that the CHURCH HAS BECOME IRRELEVANT IN THE PHILIPPINES.

The battle being fought by our countrymen is not only political as good politicians against the corruot ones. It is not only economic in nature with businessmen whose only purpose is to squeeze the blood, sweat and tears of their Kababayans as against those who run their business keeping in mind their social responsibility to their countrymen. IT IS A SPIRITUAL WARFARE. THE MERE FACT THAT THE COUNTRY IS IN THE MIDST OF MORAL BANKUPTCY SIMPLY CALLS FOR A MORAL SOLUTION TO THE ILLS THAT ENSLAVE OUR COUNTRYMEN.

The compass there fore that this article is referring to is the compass that leads us to the MORAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR EACH OTHER. UNLESS AND UNTILL EACH AND EVERY FILIPINO HOLDS THE SAME COMPASS POINTING TO THIS DIRECTION OUR COUNTRY WILL ALWAYS BE IN TURMOIL AND WILL ALWAYS REMAIN IN THE SHADOW OF DARKNESS UNTIL WE ALLOW THE LIGHT OF TRUTH AND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND RESPONSIBILITY TO COME IN TO RULE OUT LIVES.

I agree with both ABS and Bernadette.
Only the Filipinos would be able to re-direct the fate of their country. If we are to put our heads together and be directed in one direction, NROTH this time, hopefully, and we could all be in sync, then we would be able to move forward.
Not to be dismissed are the efforts and sacrifices that the Religious groups have done, especially the NUNS. And yes, the NUNS are far more courageous than the Priests, including the Bishops and the Cardinals. While I do not disparage the sacrifice made by GOMBURZA, which was the turning point in the Philippines’ fight for justice and equal rights against Spain. Their execution, indeed, sparked the Philippine Revolution. But not to be missed and forgotten is the separate directions that Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo took, leading to the death of Andres. As we, present day Filipinos have learned from history, we should for a change head into one direction, taking a compass with us and head up NORTH!

Different sectors have different concerns. And to get to their objectives they have different routes and ways. Final destination would be to the pillar of success. Up NORTH as the saying goes. Thus, we as a nation, would be collectively dreaming of getting to he top, or at least get out of this rut or doldrum we are in presently. Some would want a quick fix, others the long tedious process. Yet, still some would want to have a status quo on the present living conditions_These are the ones who have turned a blind eye to his surroundings. Like I Live For Me attitude, which should not have a place in this world, hope they realize this sooner rather than later.
In our dream of uplifting ourselves, we come from varied points of direction, and headed into the summit of a successful journey. Yes, we may come from different directions, but sooner than we think, we would be seeing each other close to the summit. Then we realize that we were all after the same thing, which is CHANGE. Change is required in order for us to uplift oursleves and lay a better foundation for our kids and their kids. We then realize that, had we been together in this journey, we would have achieved change at a much faster pace. What I am trying to say here is that, while we come from directions, we should move in unison, as without unity, we may not be able to realize that dream. Therefore, coming from all points, SOUTH, EAST, WEST, let us all bind together and move together headed UP NORTH. Shall we?
If we are determined to achieve our own agenda, we should do this collectively and in sync. You’d be surprised what UNITY could achieve.
